CLIMARC

Near-future Arctic climate change and its impact on the Netherlands and on Dutch policy

This project addresses Arctic climate change and its impact on midlatitude climate, with possible implications for Dutch policy concerning the Arctic. Mechanisms and feedbacks that govern the amplified warming and sea ice retreat in the Arctic are quantified in a method that takes into account the time-dependency of the feedbacks. Moreover, the impacts (dynamic and thermodynamic) of changes in Arctic sea ice and the associated warming on midlatitude climate is quantified using the global climate model EC-Earth. Finally, the effect of Arctic climate change on Dutch policy with respect to shipping, transport, and ecology in the Arctic will be addressed.
