A SPONTANEOUS RAYLEIGH-BRILLOUIN SCATTERING EXPERIMENT FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION OF ATMOSPHERIC LIDAR BACKSCATTER (TN4 part 3)

J de Kloe, A Stoffelen

The difference between the theoretical Rayleigh-Brillouin lineshape and the measured lineshape from the experiment at the VU in Amsterdam (the residual) is used to estimate the effect on wind-error as will be observed by the ADM-Aeolus mission. The method used is to deconvolve the measured spectrum with the Airy instrument function that describes the VU spectrometer, calculate the residual, add this to the expected spectrum for the ADM-Aeolus geometry, then apply the instrument function of the ADM-Aeolus optical system to the spectrum, which yeilds the response values. The change in geometry is taken into account by rescaling the spectrum to the dimensionless x- and y-parameters used for in the formulation of the Tenti S6 model. Finally the effect on the wind is derived by inverting the perturbed response to wind, using the inverted unperturbed response-to-wind relation.
