Optimisation of Rotating, Range-Gated Fanbeam Scatterometer for Wind Retrieval, task 2a report, GMF and wind field definition, and wind retrieval

J de Kloe

This document describes some components that have been developed as part of the Rotating Fanbeam Scatterometer (RFSCAT) simulation program.

The overal goal of the RFSCAT study is to simulate the performance of the proposed system by performing an end-to-end simulation of windfield retrieval with the RFSCAT system. This will enable the system to be optimised with respect to the many design choices that can be made.

The subjects covered in this report are: proposed wind field scenarios, GMF model, expected geophysical noise contributions, the Level 1b Generator, wind retrieval and winddirection skill.
