In a recent paper Sterl (2001) investigated the impact of di erent gap- lling algorithms on variability patterns and the internal consistency of reconstructed elds by calculating correlation maps between monthly anomalies of quantities from di erent datasets. This analysis is extended here by considering two satellite-derived data sets. Additional evidence is presented for the assumption that the NCEP-NCAR reanalysis exhibits realistic variability.
