The MACC II (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate II, http://www.copernicus- atmosphere.eu) project is establishing the core global and regional atmospheric environmental service delivered as a component of the European Earth observation programme Copernicus (previously known as GMES, Global Monitoring for Environment and Security). The global MACC reanalysis service provides a 10-year reanalysis for the years 2003-2012 of trace gas and aerosol concentrations. This document presents the validation statistics of the MACC reanalysis service for the period until the end of 2012.
In the report the validation results are summarised. This summary is split according to areas of interest to users: atmospheric composition, climate forcing, regional air quality, and the ozone layer. Specific attention is given to the ability of the MACC system to capture events. The MACC reactive gases reanalysis system is produced by the coupled IFS-MOZART modelling and assimilation system, while the aerosol reanalysis is produced by the MACC prognostic aerosol module in IFS. The reanalysis has been produced with a fixed model configuration for the full period. However, changes were implemented in the data-usage and the bias correction scheme during the production of the reanalysis.
