Wave heights predicted by the operational KNMI wave model ( GONO) and the
wind fields derived from UK Meteorological Office fine-mesh pressure fields
(GONO wind) have been compared with observations. The comparison is made
for the following elements: the wind direction, the wind speed, the wave
height and the low frequency wave height, for the period October 1986 until
April 1987 inclusive for the following locations: EPF, IJMUIDEN and K-13 in the
southern North Sea, AUK in the central North Sea and BRENT in the
northern North Sea. Also a comparison has been made for the GONO wind and
the UK Meteorological Office fine-mesh wind fields ( UK-6 wind ). Note the
UK-6 wind fields are not exactly the same wind fields used by the British
Meteorological Office because of different interpolation procedures, we
show that there is a good correlation between errors in the GONO wind and
errors in the calculated wave height. The correlation coefficient is about
.70 for all the positions. The UK-6 winds have both a smaller standard
deviation as a smaller scatter index than the GONO winds. Along the coast
the UK-6 winds are too low in the mean.
