Dr. Wei Han Leader Data Assimilation Group Deputy Director Research and Development division Numerical Weather Prediction Centre Chinese Meteorological Administration Beijing, China

Dr. Wei Han is a key developer of the Chinese new generation NWP system (GRAPES) and leads the GRAPES global 3D-Var development now for 10 years (Han et al. 2009, 2010, 2011). The GRAPES global 3D-Var became operational in December 2015 at the Chinese Meteorological Administration (CMA) and its development, performances and future plans will be presented. Dr. Han Wei is a satellite data assimilation expert and investigated the assimilation of IASI ozone channels and improved ECMWF IFS ozone analyses. On 15 November 2011, ECMWF implemented the operational assimilation of ozone-sensitive infrared radiances from AIRS, IASI and HIRS. This represents a major milestone in exploiting infrared sounders and analyzing ozone. Other aspects of recent interest are the use of Atmospheric Motion Vectors in NWP, use of surface-sensitive microwave channels over land, intercomparison of RTTOV and CRTM for satellite radiance assimilation, use of microwave imager channels to improve hurricane analyses and forecasts and the tuning of observation error of satellite radiances.
