Waar Buys Ballotzaal, KNMI

Harmonie is the high-resolution weather and climate flagship used at KNMI. This model especially shows its added value for one of KNMI's most important core tasks: (early) weather and climate predictions of extreme, potentially dangerous, weather conditions.

In this presentation, it will be shown how KNMI R&D on Harmonie model physics directly leads to improved performance on KNMI core tasks.

Topics that will be discussed are:
-What is meant by model physics?
-How does the model R&D process works in practice?
-The benifit of improved model physics.
Finally, an outline is given for some important future research topics
